Yellowjackets set York, PA on fire!!!

Posted to: YellowJackets Online Discussion Forum

First, I would like to say, Russ, Jimmy, Bob, and Marcus, Thank you for the concert of a lifetime!!! Last night was like the first time that I say you three years ago at the Kenswick Theater. You left me speechless. In addition, thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me and all the other fans. You guys are so sincere. I could hardly believe that you actually remembered me from the last time we met in Reading, PA. You are guys are simply the best!!!

Now, for everyone else. Last night, the Yellowjackets set York, PA on fire. This was a special event for me because York is my hometown. The guys were completely in the zone in a big way. It was as if four people became one person. They were connected, as if they had one mind. As a result, incredible music flowed from the stage.

Everyone was on fire and everyone took solos that were out of this world. I remembered thinking, is it possible for anyone to really play like this or am I in a dream? The guys were inspired. Russ worked his magic on the keys, those chords and runs were breathtaking. Bob had that tenor screaming, I mean screaming! Jimmy took a solo that was just unreal. I have never scene a bass player play that fast. But it was not about speed, at one point, it was as if Jimmy poured his soul onto the bass. And then there was Marcus. I haven't scene a drum solo like that since the last time I saw Will Kennedy. Now please don't get me wrong, Marcus is not a Will clone. He is his own man, totally original and his solo was truly inspirational.

Which brings me to the next point. Russ mentioned that the Jackets are definitely going to be recording soon. They played several of their new songs and let me tell you, when the new cd comes out next year, it is going to be one to remember.

And it sounds like Marcus is going to be on that new cd!!! Let me tell you again, the new cd is going to be good. These new Yellowjackets are on fire!!! Well that is all for now, sorry I was so long, but it is the Yellowjackets that I am talking about. How can I keep it short?

First time YellowJackets concert goer, and I really didn't know what to expect. Friends of mine in the music industry had only great things to say about the YellowJackets and hold high regard for the individual band members.  Got off to a rather embarassing start by arriving late and holding four seats in Row B (yea, up front, center section, 2nd row).  Oops.  Got to stand WAY in the back of the room for the first song.  From a distance, Jimmy Haslip's body posture looked rather, um shall we say uncomfortable. Uncomfortable to watch that is.  Wasn't feeling the groove. Then came the magic.

We ambled on down to our seats and got to experience the guys close up... and maybe it was just me, but it seemed like the warmed up and stepped it up a notch to supernatural.  The connection to their big groove thing was almost instant.  Each guy played a solo stint and I kept having the recurring thought "he's the best keyboardist/bass player/sax player/drummer I've ever witnessed!"  No kidding, Jimmy played this bass solo that seemed more like an emotional outpouring than a musical performance.  That guys sure does groove, body AND soul.  At first I was a bit taken aback by Bob's electronic sax thingie--what will they electrify next? (keep in mind we Strand regulars already glimpsed the  electronic upright bass of Michael George when Roger Williams passed thrugh town).  Anyhoo, wow does that electronic sax thingie make some pleasing sounds!  Bob was hitting it!  I kept thinking "this is too good to be true, these guys couldn't be THIS ON for little York, PA...  or are they always this tight, this connected..."   We were so lucky to have the YellowJackets come to Central PA! Thanks guys!

Being a former childhood drummer, I'd b remiss if I didn't mention the most astounding drum solo by Marcus Baylor. Holy schmoly!  This guy was so good and so fun to watch.  Kinda got that notion of the 'greatest audition solo ever' level of effort produced by Mr. Baylor.   Like he was showing the world he was exceptionally well qualified to be in that seat with this band!  Hope we see him again soon!  Speaking of fun to watch... perhaps the single most compelling element of this show was the big wide and wonderful smile of Russell Ferrante.  He smiles and you feel this big feeling  of "wow, this guy really loves what he's doing!" And that just makes the entire audience smile!  Thanks again guys, come back soon!

One after thought here...  after the show, the band was out in the lobby happily chatting with the  public.  To me, this means soooooo much!  Not that I had one word of intelligible dialogue to share with them, but uh... let's just say wish I had my camera!   The Strand is a venue that is conducive to this sort of interaction (not all rednecky on security and trying to clear the lobby)-- Strand managment wants fans to have an enjoyable night!   And with the YellowJackets burning down the house, how couldn't ya have a fabulous time??  Thanks again YellowJackets!
