Bruce Springsteen performed two holiday concerts for charity on December 17th & 18th, 2000 at Convention Hall Asbury Park, NJ. Here are reviews from fans who attended the show. (scan ticket)
NOTE: additional contributions in the form of corrections, fan reviews, trader info, photographs, etc are welcome and desired for this page. Email me! (excerpted reviews from www.the boots.net) The same main show was played the second night. However, about an hour and a half before the show started and after fans had already entered the building, Bruce did a soundcheck that included Patti, Lisa Lowell, Soozie Tyrell, Southside Johnny on harmonica, Nils on piano, and Garry on stand-up bass. They did "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)," "Hey, Good Lookin'," and "Mystery Train." A very magical moment for those lucky enough to be in the theatre at the time. During the main set, Marah added some backing vocals on Santa Claus. The material from
the second album all sounded great with the addition of the horns from
the Max Weinberg 7. "Blue Christmas" was done in a basically bluegrass
arrangement. "Lucky Town" featured Bruce and Jimmy Vivino trading off guitar
solos and the horns added some great punch to it. The Southside songs also
benefitted from the horns, as did
Bruce's new song,
"My City of Ruins," is very powerful and very gospel-esque, sounding very
similar to Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready." Bruce dedicated the song
to the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce and mentioned all the charities
that each night was benefitting. Check out the haunting lyrics.
