Those that stayed in York and went to the David Sanborn show at the Strand were served a delicious grand finale treat. Sanborn's show was the last show before our beloved Strand-Capitol theater complex goes off-line for major renovations. And David Sanborn and his band took us our in style! The show's intro seemed sort of wham-bam jump right into it with a tune called "Chicago". At first I was worried this was gonna be a hit and run show for the boys and that special magic wasn't going to flow on this fine night. But half-way into the "Savannah", the band found their groove! Don't be fooled by the short looking set list. This is probably more reporter error as the night in fact flowed flawlessly and one song ran into the next. At one point I recall having this reaction to Sanborn's playing like he was so technically "on" that I had this sensation he was sort of herding an ethereal mist completely at his whim. As in, he created this misty sound sensation and was just moving it around at will with his playing skills. Tasty! With relatively little effort he'd guide the band through a song with African rhythms and then into an upbeat tempo jam. Easy for the listener to follow along and enjoy! Early on, we'd get a few licks of Richard Patterson's bass playing. It was almost as if David was keeping him hidden for a big surprise entree into the session. And oh what an entrance Mr. Patterson made! WOW! At one point the boys in the band had things so under control and feeling fine, that Sanborn stepped off stage for a breather and the sounds were still sounding FINE! Richard Patterson is a fabulous player. Well suited to Sanborn's technical playing skills me thinks... Something about Richard Patterson's playing makes ya just wanna get right into it with him! A joy to behold! Just before the encore, a fanatic Sanborn admirer presented himself at the front of the stage with a currently registered Pennsylvania license plate that said SANBORN. This gesture made Dave and the band smile. Although not enough to come back on stage after the show... Mr. Sanborn was kind enough to make an appearance in the back alley near the tour buses and pose for a few photos and sign a few autographs. NICE GUY! Tune back into this page to see a few more photos with Sanborn and his admirers! Mr. Sanborn, thanks
for a great evening in a grand old music hall! The perfect way to
close out the season and close up the venue for renovations. Please come
back and visit our new and improved Strand!
